I love the author’s emphasis on the power of books and the value of community. As a family that values read-aloud time, this sweet book is a sure win!

In this sweet story, Mr. Hatch lives a lonely life. He receives a Valentine’s Day package that completely transforms his outlook. Mr. Hatch begins acting neighborly and showing love to others. But when he discovers the package was not intended for him, he becomes depressed. His neighbors become concerned and rally around him to express their love for Mr. Hatch.

Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney
This wonderful book is an old friend in our home. Miss Rumphius’ story challenges us “to make the world more beautiful” with a gentle reminder that this task is the most difficult. She sows seeds of lupines along the country roads, hillsides, schools, and churches. While the flowers are beautiful, her legacy is stunning. I highly recommend reading this book to the young children in your life.
5. May’s Booklist

This is a beautiful story of a retired sailor settles at his home near the sea, loving the silence and solitude. But, his solitude is interrupted by his two neighbors, a young girl and her grandmother. Swashby tries to ignore this delightful new friend but the sea brings them together. This is my favorite book of unlikely new friends!

Mr. Magee takes his dog, Dee, on a camping trip but they get into trouble with a marshmallow-loving bear. This is one of our favorite books from Chris Van Dusen. I love the simple rhyme and colorful illustrations.

Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear by Lindsay Mattick
This is a sweet book about Harry Colebourn, A Canadian veterinarian who enlisted in service during World War I and purchased a beloved baby bear from a trapper at a train station. The beloved bear becomes the unit’s mascot and a gentle reminder of the Canadian’s home, Winnipeg. Winnie joins the troops during training, but when called to combat, Harry brings Winnie to the London Zoo. There at the zoo, a young boy named Christopher Robin Milne befriends Winnie, becoming the inspiration for the name of the famous bear, Winnie-the-Pooh.

This wonderful story is about a timid little squirrel named Evergreen and her brave journey to deliver soup to Granny Oak. Evergreen must overcome many of her fears along the way. The story is divided into short chapters but can be read in one sitting. Matthew Cordell is a Caldecott Medal winner and new to me author.

Sophie Blackall beautifully illustrates the daily life and the stories of the farmhouse. It truly is a beautiful book that allows you to peek through the windows and experience the joy of the farmhouse. This is a must-read on farm books for kids

Omu is so excited about her big red stew. The delicious smell brings many individuals from the neighborhood. And, Omu shares her stew with all until it is all gone. She has nothing left for supper. Omu’s generosity is returned by her neighbors, bringing a community feast of delicious food into her home. This is such a lovely story and is a must-read of children’s literature.
