Apple investigation Worksheet. This hands-on learning apple activity is simple for young children to practice problem-solving, basic math concepts, scientific investigation, communication, and fine motor skills.

Multi-sensory activities such as this apple investigation activity empower little learners to explore the parts of an apple by incorporating sight, smell, touch, and taste. Young children have a natural inclination to explore with their senses, and they benefit greatly from whole-brain experiences versus printable worksheets. I love to use this activity as a follow-up to picking our own apples, then with another great activity like baking something delicious. Don’t forget to save the seeds for more fun! Of course, this apple experiment worksheet is a great addition to apple unit, fun apple theme lesson plan, or fun apple week.

Use this as a follow-up activity this fall season after a visit to an apple orchard and accompany it with wholesome apple picture books.

How to Print the Apple Investigation Worksheet?

Print.

The pdf file includes 6 pages. Print at home, local library, or store. The pages contain low to moderate levels of color to help draw the attention and delight of younger children. I have also included a black and white option to help reduce the cost of ink.

For Best Results.

I highly recommend printing on cardstock and laminating the investigation bingo and early learning pages for increased durability and for continued use in your classroom. Laminating the apple investigation worksheet also allows your child to mark off completed boxes with a dry-erase marker.

What are the benefits of using worksheets like the apple investigation printable?

This apple worksheet is focused on sensory play with a little guided learning.

Here are a few benefits of using hands-on learning experiences like the apple investigation worksheets:

  • supports language development by challenging young kids to use new vocabulary words and communicate what they taste, smell, see, and touch
  • enhances memory by participating in a complex activity
  • supports brain development by activating multiple areas in the brain
  • improves observational skills
  • encourages problem-solving and critical thinking
  • introduces difficult and complex mathematical and scientific concepts

Tips for using Apple Investigation Worksheet Bundle with kids:

  • encourage young kids to determine the instructions based on the visual cues provided in each bingo square
  • keep quizzing to a minimum until the end to prevent interrupting a child’s natural inclination to explore
  • lay out the apple investigation station prior to beginning
  • an adult should perform the required cutting of the apple (or closely supervise older children)
  • if a child becomes intrigued when they see an apple float, allow them to experiment with other objects
  • do not feel the need to complete every box on the bingo sheet

Troubleshooting: What If I don’t have all the tools?

What if I don’t have a measuring tape?

Cut a piece of yarn the circumference of the apple and measure the piece of yarn along the edge of a ruler.

What if I don’t have a scale?

In early learning, the purpose of weighing objects is to help kids learn how to compare, categorize, and sort objects. But young children are also being introduced to basic physics principles. Have your child discover something heavier than the apple and something lighter.

What if I cannot afford multiple apples for my kids in this experiment?

This is an excellent time to teach kids how to be resourceful. Use this experiment prior to making an apple snack or apple pie.

How I use the the apple investigation printable at home with my kids?

This has become one of my oldest favorite ways to explore new things. She will start by saying, “Let’s investigate.” It’s the cutest thing! This year we used this activity as follow-up fun after visiting a pick-your-own apple orchard. We gathered multiple types of apples (green and red apples). In the weeks before our apple picking, I like to add a fun range of pictures books all about apples to our library haul. We have a favorite read about Johnny Appleseed and of course we love to giggle at Ten Apples on Top by Dr. Seuss. My girls lead the investigation, and I intervene when necessary with a few questions: can you count the number of apple seeds, what’s that, etc.? I help with the tools like the scale and measuring tape.

After we are done with our exploration, I make sure to collect the apple slices and bake something delicious like Apple Butter Scones. This year we saved the seeds. So, I have random plastic bags of seeds with damp paper towels pushed in the back of my fridge. It’s been a few weeks, and we finally have a few sprouts. I’ll update if we ever actually have an apple tree. 🙂
