Best Letter R Books for Preschool and Kindergarten Booklist. This alphabet booklist is a part of the series Sprinkled with Stories: Teaching the Alphabet Through Stories. It can be daunting to think about teaching your young ones their letters. Relax 🙂 Kids learn so much through play and stories. There is no need to drill flashcards every day. Although flashcards do have a purpose, especially in play. Simply grab one or two living books from the Letter R Books for Preschool booklist and began to introduce the letters and the sounds during story time and play time. Grab some letter blocks or letter puzzles for play with after story time.

R is for red

1. Little Red Riding Hood by Paul Galdone

When sharing a classic tale with my girls, I always read Paul Galdone’s books. This book is a classic telling of a sweet little girl dressed in the iconic red hood who travels to visit her grandmother and along the way, she encounters a wicked wolf.

2. The Little Red Hen by Paul Galdone

This is a classic story of reaping what you sow. When the little red hen asks for help from all the different animals, no one wants to help. So, she is left to do all the work herself.

3. The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and The Big Hungry Bear by Audrey Wood

The little mouse hurries to retrieve a red, ripe strawberry, but the narrator taunts him about the big hungry bear.

R is for Robins

4. Robins! How They Grow Up by Eileen Christelow

This is my favorite picture book about Robins. With beautiful illustrations and comic-book-style panels, it narrates the story of a family of robins.

6. Raindrops to Rainbows by John Micklos Jr.

This is a precious picture book with lively illustrations about a little girl on a gloomy, rainy day. She dreams of clear blue skies and a bright yellow sun, but outside is gray with streaks of white lighting. Although it’s gloomy weather, her mom and Brown Bear are near to cheer her up. As clouds start clearing, she sees a…“Beaming rainbow, bold and bright, brilliant colors, what a sight!”

7. Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert

This simple book includes the names of many flowers. A mom and her child plant a rainbow of various plants, from buying seeds in a catalog to seedlings at the nursery. They enjoy their colorful garden each year.

8. The Hidden Rainbow by Christie Matheson

One little bee peeks out on a world of gray and snow.
She’s looking for bright colors and needs you to help them grow.

This charmingly illustrated picture book reveals all the colors of the rainbow in the garden, inviting readers to interact by brushing off the camellia tree and tickling the tulips. This is one of our favorite books for spring time and the little bee even needs to escape a rain shower. This book is so much fun to read to little learners.

9. The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter

Beatrix Potter illustrated letters to children that turned into classic children’s books. In 1893, she illustrated a letter about Peter Rabbit to a friend’s five-year-old child. This became her first book. A book about a little brown rabbit named Peter who rebelled against his mama’s wish to avoid Mr. McGregor’s garden

This delightful picture book tells the story of a family of rabbits in their daily activities narrated in charming lyrical prose.

11. Over and Under the Rainforest by Kate Messner

In this nature picture, a young child named Tito and his uncle venture into the rainforest filled with fear and wonder as they encounter the animals along through journey to Abuelita’s house. We love the Over and Under series by Kate Messner.

12. Secrets of the Rainforest: A Shine-A-Light Book by Carron Brown

This book is a fun bedtime story. Make sure to turn off the lights and have a flashlight. This book is a fun way to explore the rainforest habitat.

R is for Raft.

13. The Raft by Jim LaMarche

A boy dreads spending his summer on the river with his grandmother (known as the river rat), but he gradually falls in love with the river. He has some pretty amazing adventures on the raft. This book is such a good read and is sure to inspire young readers to seek outdoor adventures
