Pumpkin Investigation Worksheet for Kids: Free Printables

Pumpkin Investigation Worksheet. This hands-on learning pumpkin activity is simple for young children to practice problem-solving, basic math concepts, scientific investigation, communication, and fine motor skills. I prefer to use little pumpkins during this pumpkin investigation sheet. Older kids may like the challenge of investigating and handling large pumpkins. But a pie pumpkin is perfect for little hands to manage and for baking a pumpkin pie after the pumpkin exploration is complete.
Multi-sensory activities such as this pumpkin investigation activity empower young learners to explore the parts of the pumpkin by incorporating sight, smell, touch, and taste. Young children have a natural inclination to explore with their senses, and they benefit greatly from whole-brain experiences versus printable worksheets. This printable promotes hands-on activities with a real pumpkin filled with its little sensory bin of fibrous strands and pumpkin seeds. 🙂 Yes, it’s going to be a bit messy. Don’t hesitate to take your pumpkin activity outdoors.
Use this as a follow-up activity this fall season after a visit to the pumpkin patch and accompany it with wholesome pumpkin books (see the booklist inside the bundle).
We are taking a gentle and loving approach to preschool, incorporating read-alouds, consistent daily rhythms, and lots of hands-on learning opportunities. I hope this free pumpkin investigation worksheet brings your children joy and much fun as they explore their own pumpkin.

Troubleshooting: What If I don’t have all the tools?
What if I don’t have a measuring tape?
Cut a piece of yarn the circumference of the pumpkin and measure the piece of yarn along the edge of a ruler.
What if I don’t have a scale?
In early learning, the purpose of weighing objects is to help kids learn how to compare, categorize, and sort objects. But young children are also being introduced to basic physics principles. Have your child discover something heavier than the pumpkin and something lighter.
What if I cannot afford multiple pumpkins for my kids?
Everyone does not need their own pumpkin. Select one pumpkin for a small group. This is an excellent time to teach kids how to be resourceful. Make sure everyone gets to try each activity.
How I use the the pumpkin investigation printable at home with my kids?
This has become one of my oldest favorite ways to explore new things. She will start by saying, “Let’s investigate.” It’s the cutest thing! First, we select the pumpkin at the local farmer’s market, grocery store, or local pumpkin patch. In the weeks before, I will add a fun range of pumpkin picture books to our library haul. We select a day and perform the investigation outdoors for easier cleanup. My girls lead the investigation, and I intervene when necessary with a few questions: can you count the number of seeds, what’s that, etc.? I help with the tools like the scale and the measuring tape. (I also perform the cutting of the pumpkin.)
After we are done with our exploration, I make sure the pumpkin is cleaned out. Preheat the oven to 400F and roast the pumpkin (rind face up) on a baking sheet prepared with parchment paper. Bake for about 40 minutes, remove the rind, and bake into a yummy pie, bread, or pumpkin cake. We also save the seeds for planting more pumpkin plants next year and roasting.
