Letter K books for preschool for Kindergarten Booklist. This alphabet booklist is a part of the series Sprinkled with Stories: Teaching the Alphabet Through Stories. It can be daunting to think about teaching your young ones their letters. Relax. 🙂 Kids learn so much through play and stories. There is no need to drill flashcards every day. Although flashcards do have a purpose, especially in play. Simply grab one or two living books from the Letter K Books for Preschool booklist and began to introduce the letters and the sounds during story time and play time. Grab some letter blocks or letter puzzles for play after story time.

K is for Koala.

1. Koala Lou by Mem Fox

A young koala named Koala Lou used to receive all of her mother’s love, but now she has to share her mom with her siblings. She feels forgotten, so she enters the Bush Olympics to compete for her mother’s attention and to hear her say, “I do love you, Koala Lou.” This is a great book to share with children of all ages.

2. The Koala Who Could by Rachel Bright

This fun story is about a koala named Kevin who is not a fan of change and fears leaving his tree until one day he is forced out of his comfort zone and into new things.

K is for Kangaroo.

3. Katy No-Pocket by Emmy Payne

A determined mama kangaroo sets out to solve a big problem. She is a mama kangaroo with no pocket to carry her baby, Freddy. She seeks advice from the other animal moms. Their responses leave her discouraged, but she is determined and keeps persevering for the sake of her little one.

4. Ranger Rick: I Wish I Was A Kangaroo by Jennifer Bove

This nonfiction book is an exciting way to explore the lives of kangaroos. The pages are filled with real wildlife photos and fascinating facts.

K is for Kittens.

5. Three Little Kittens by Paul Galdone

The classic tale of the three careless kittens who lost their mittens retold by Paul Galdone.

6. The Tale of Tom Kitten by Beatrix Potter

In this beloved tale by Beatrix Potter, Mother dresses Tom and his sisters in their fine new clothes. She sends them outdoors with a warning to stay clean while Mother anticipates her visitors. The kittens find themselves in a mess.

7. Moses the Kitten in the James Herriot Children’s Treasury

The author, James, shares his experiences with animals and farmers as a veterinarian in the British countryside. The pages are filled with adorable animals with spunky and courageous personalities. James’ warm love and care shine bright in every story. This truly is a treasure of a book. I recommend reading the chapter “Moses the Kitten.”

K is for Kitchen.

8. Granny’s Kitchen by Sade Smith

Shelly-Ann’s grandmother is a wonderful cook who masters the delicacies of Jamaica. But Shelly-Ann struggles to cook like her grandmother. Her determination and love for food motivate her to keep going with a little help from her beloved granny. Kids will love the colorful illustrations.

9. The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry

This story is about a man falling asleep at the base of the giant kapok tree while trying to chop it down. While sleeping all the living things whisper in his ear to save the tree.

K is for Kiss.

10. A Kiss for Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik

This delightful story is about a traveling thank-you kiss from Grandmother to Little Bear. The kiss is passed to Hen, to Cat, to Little Skunk, to a girl Skunk, and finally reaches Little Bear. And the skunks get married.

12. The Cook and the King by Julia Donaldson

This silly story is about a hungry king but none of his cooks make a dish fit for the king’s taste. But Wobbly Bob, who is scared of everything in the kitchen unexpectedly tricks the king into giving him the job.

13. The King and the Dragon by James W. Shrimpton

This picture book echoes Christ’s victory over sin and death. It’s a picture of the story of redemption from brokenness and despair to restored and victorious. This book is a biblical narrative with the King (God), the knight (Jesus), and the Dragon (satan) with magical illustrations and a rhyming text.
