5 Best Letter Y Books for Preschool and Kindergarten: Teaching the Alphabet Through Stories
Y is for Yarn.
1. Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett
This is a charming story about a girl with a box of endless yarn. She knits for the whole town. It’s worth mentioning that there’s a bad guy in the story (which I think is unnecessary).
2. A Friendship Yarn by Lisa Moser
In this story, a ball of red yarn tumbles from a peddler’s wagon. Badger discovers one end and starts creating a gift for her friend Porcupine. Meanwhile, Porcupine finds the other end and, without hesitation, begins knitting for Badger. However, they are both working with the same ball of yarn, unwittingly unraveling each other’s projects. As they prioritize their own needs, their friendship becomes strained. But don’t worry, their bond is eventually mended. It’s important to note that the characters exhibit some negative behaviors throughout the tale.
Y is for Yak.
3. Yaks Yak: Animal Word Pairs by Linda Sue Park
This book is a comedic twist on homographs. My girls always giggle at the word play. However, I don’t think they fully understand it just yet. It’s a fun book to read!
Y is for Yellow
4. Yellow Kayak by Nina Laden
In this adventurous tale, a young child sets off on a journey in the sea in his yellow kayak and best friend.
Y is for Yeti
5. Dear Yeti by James Kwan
Two hikers write letters to the Yeti as they set out on a search to find the Yeti. This book is so cute and a fun, playful read. My kids asked me to read it over and over again.
