It can be daunting to think about teaching your young ones their letters. Relax. 🙂 Kids learn so much through play and stories. There is no need to drill flashcards every day. Although flashcards do have a purpose, especially in play. Simply grab one or two living books from the Letter E Books for Preschool booklist and began to introduce the letters and the sounds during story time and play time. Grab some letter blocks or letter puzzles for play after story time.

E is for Egg.

1. One Early Morning by Mem Fox

A little boy hunts for something special for the breakfast table. Along the way, he sees many farm animals. He finds what he wants and then enjoys breakfast with his grandmother.

2. Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss’s book Green Eggs and Ham is a longer read but do not count it out. It is a great book to encourage little ones to try different things.

3. An Egg is Quiet by Dianna Hutts Aston

This beautifully illustrated book on nature showcases a variety of eggs, ranging from large ostrich eggs to slimy frog eggs. With over 60 types of eggs, young readers are introduced to a diverse array of nature’s wonders. CONTENT WARNING: Reference to millions of years.

4. Egg by Kevin Henkes

This tale of an unlikely friendship is fun for preschoolers with simple text and pastel-colored illustrations.

5. Bear Finds Eggs by Karma Wilson

The beloved Bear and his woodland friends take a stroll through the forest near Strawberry Vale and find eggs along the way, leaving gifts for the soon-to-hatch baby birds. But then they are sent on a quest by a worried Mama Meadowlark to help find her missing eggs. Everyone lends a hand.

6. An Extraordinary Egg by Leo Lionni

This is a silly story about three frogs and a “chicken.” One day, a frog discovers a beautiful white egg which is assumed to be a chicken egg. One day that egg hatches but out pops a baby alligator. The silly frogs continue to call the baby a chicken even with its green scales and long tail. This is a fun story of mistaken identity.

7. The Emperor’s Egg by Martin Jenkins

This is a fun nonfiction picture book about the Emperor penguin and how it cares for an egg in the freezing cold.

E is for Elephant.

8. Horton Hears a Who by Dr. Seuss

This Dr. Seuss book is a longer read and a wonderful bedtime story. It is such a great story to encourage children to care for others who are different. I love to read books to my kids that help build character and inspire honesty and honor.

9. Ranger Rick: I Wish I Was an Elephant by Jennifer Bove

This nonfiction book is an exciting way to explore the lives of elephants. The pages are filled with real wildlife photos and fascinating facts.

10. A Parade of Elephants by Kevin Henkes

This is a fun book that follows five marching elephants from sun up to sun down. The text is simple and rhythmic. The bright pastel illustrations are not visually overwhelming. This is a great book to introduce the letter sound for E and counting from 1 through 5.

11. Richard Scarry’s Polite Elephant

This is a lovely book to share with young readers. In this story, little ones can learn manners and politeness through the example of the polite elephant.

12. The Saggy Baggy Elephant by Kathryn Jackson

“A happy little elephant was dancing through the jungle…”

The timeless tale, originally published in 1947, follows a young elephant who begins to worry about his big ears, long nose, and wrinkled skin because of all the talk from the other jungle animals. Although I do not condone Ping’s selfish response to his friend, I am impressed by his father’s support in encouraging him to be truthful and courageous in front of the Emperor.

E is for Engine.

17. The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper

It’s time to introduce your little readers to the smallest, most determined blue engine. The historical little engine that could pull all the toys and goodies for “all those good little boys and girls on the other side of the mountain.” This is such a valuable lesson for all.
