It can be daunting to think about teaching your young ones their letters. Relax 🙂 Kids learn so much through play and stories. There is no need to drill flashcards every day. Although flashcards do have a purpose, especially in play. Peter, the main character wants to whistle so his dog, Willie, will respond. He tries all day while doing the activities of an imaginative little boy in the city. At the day’s end, determined Peter gets it. Young children will love the bold, warm colors and the simple text.
4. Mama Seeton’s Whistle by Jerry Spinelli
This is a sweet and heartwarming story of a simple family and a mama with a two-note whistle to call her children for dinner. Her children come running home for hugs, kisses, and chocolate cake. The illustrations remind me of the Norman Rockwell calendar that used to hang near my granny’s fridge.

The classic song “What a Wonderful World,” made famous by Louis Armstrong, is vividly brought to life through vibrant and colorful illustrations.
7. Walking in a Winter Wonderland (song by Peggy Lee) Illustrated by Tim Hopgood
The adorable illustrations of this picture book is caught my eye. My little girls love reading and signing the lyrics to the classic holiday song “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” while following along the book’s snowy pages.

Sophie Blackall’s illustrations always draw me in, and this one is no exception. This humorous picture book is a fun counting poem about six brave little wombats on a walkabout in the Australian outback. A hungry dingo lingers near!

A sister and brother take a walk, asking some thought-provoking questions. The book is filled with unique and colorful illustrations.
10. I Went Walking by Sue Williams
This simple book nods to the classic book “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” by Bill Martin Jr. Instead of a classroom, the story unfolds as a young child goes for a walk followed by animal friends.
