It can be a challenge to find store-bought or even homemade recipes with wholesome ingredients. I love being able to whip up my family’s favorite treats right in my own kitchen. And, the best part is that I don’t have to worry about the weird, unknown ingredients listed on the label. I can control the amount of sugar and use quality ingredients.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe from Scratch
In the past, I have followed many chocolate chip cookie recipes but none of them produced the soft, chewy chocolate chip cookies that I wanted. I have been playing with and perfecting this recipe for over two years. And, it is the reigning champ for my family’s all-time favorite cookies!
Here are some modifications for the Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe:
- Chewy Cookies: Brown your butter in the skillet to achieve a chewy cookie
- Soft and Gooey Cookies: Bake until the bottoms are just starting to brown (10-12 minutes)
- Increase Molasses Flavor: Change the brown and white sugar ratio to 3/4 cup of brown sugar and 1/4 cup of white sugar
- Low Sugar (low glycemic index): Replace white sugar with coconut sugar. Also, adding a scoop of collage protein powder helps prevent the sugar rush.

Homemade Whipped Cream from Scratch
Homemade whipped cream is one of my favorite things! It is so easy and simple to make. It’s just 3 simple ingredients tossed into the mixing bowl and then mixed for 10 minutes on medium-high speed.
Here are some modifications for the Homemade Whipped Cream from Scratch:
- No vanilla flavor then substitute with maple syrup
- Replace the granulated sugar and sweeten with honey or coconut sugar (honey is not recommended for children under one year of age)
- Naturally, dye and add flavor with fruit such as berries. Blueberries achieve a light purple with a berry flavor. Raspberries will tint the cream a reddish pink but be prepared the taste is very tart.

Additions to Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwich with Whipped Cream Filling:
- Sprinkles. You can never go wrong with sprinkles. Want to avoid food dyes? Then, try these naturally colored sprinkles dyed with turmeric and beets. All plant-based.
- My littles and I are currently trying to develop a yummy naturally dyed sprinkle recipe and simple method. I’ll update this post with our recipe at a later date.
- Sweetened/Unsweetened Coconut Shavings: I am just a sucker for anything coconut flavored, so, I love adding a few shavings along the edge of the filling.
- Miniature Chocolate Chips: Cannot get enough chocolate? Add mini chocolate chips to the edge of the filling.
- Ice cream: Top with vanilla ice cream or chocolate ice cream!

- Medium bowl and the bowl of the stand mixer
- Wire rack for cooling
- Airtight container for storing

Chocolate Chip Cookie Ingredients
- 3/4 cup butter (1.5 sticks) softened or browned
- 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 1 lg egg at room temperature
- 2 tsp vanilla flavoring
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp sea salt (or Kosher salt)
- 1 1/4 cup of milk chocolate chips (semisweet chocolate chips or your favorite chocolate chunks)
- optional: sprinkles for edges of sandwiches

- 1 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla flavoring

The Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe


- First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare a large cookie sheet. Set the prepared pan aside.
- Options for non-stick methods: line with parchment paper, spray with non-stick spray, cover pan with coconut oil, or coat with butter and a little sprinkle of flour.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine melted or softened butter with brown and white sugar. Using your whisk attachment on the electric mixer, beat on medium speed for at least 5 minutes. Then, beat in the eggs and vanilla extract until combined. As needed, use a spatula to scrape the sides of the bowl.
- Using a separate mixing bowl, combine dry ingredients including all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Then, add the flour mixture to a large bowl with the wet mixture and mix until combined at low speed. Change to spatula attachment on the electric mixer. Briefly mix in 1 cup of chocolate chips or fold them in with a spatula.
- Next, using a large cookie scoop or by hand, roll 3 tbsp of cookie dough into a ball and evenly space cookies along the prepared baking sheet. Using the remaining 1/4 cup of chocolate chips, press the chips into the tops of the portioned cookie dough balls.
- Finally, bake in preheated oven for 12 minutes. You will notice the bottoms just barely starting to turn golden brown. Watch carefully, baking times may vary based on the oven. Let cookies rest on the baking sheet until able to safely move cookies to the cooling rack.

Homemade Whipped Cream Filling Recipe
- First, add all ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Place the whisk attachment on the electric mixer. Mix the ingredients on medium-high speed for 10 minutes.

Assembling the Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwich with Whipped Cream Filling
- Simply, take one cooled chocolate chip cookie and spread the desired amount of whipped cream on the bottom side of the cookie. Add a second cookie to make a sandwich.
- Now, enjoy or add some sprinkles for next-level fun! For a less messy treat, chill or freeze them for 2 hours before enjoying them! Store assembled cookies in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. OR, FREEZE cookies for approximately 2 hours and enjoy frozen yummy chocolate chip cookie sandwiches.

Tips for Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwich with Whipped Cream Filling Recipe
- MAKE AHEAD: I recommend making cookie sandwiches and chilling them for 2 hours or freezing the cookie sandwiches. This makes less of a mess. 🙂 If you want to make it ahead of time, make the chocolate chip cookies and leave them at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Store the whipped cream in the fridge for up to 3 days. Assemble the cookie sandwich when desired. Or, assemble the cookie sandwiches, place them in an airtight container, and store them in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- FREEZE: This chocolate chip cookie recipe freezes so well. Portion the dough and roll it into balls. Arrange them in a single layer in an airtight container for up to 2 months. I find the frozen homemade whipped cream difficult to deal with if I’m using it specifically to assemble the cookie sandwiches. But, if you have leftover whipped cream, DO NOT toss it out. Freeze it into portions and add it to hot drinks, top your favorite ice cream, or use it to top a bowl of cut-up fresh fruit for later. It keeps in the freezer for up to 2 months but the texture does change.
- FROZEN TREATS: This chocolate chip cookie sandwich with whipped cream filling is my favorite treat frozen. Assemble the cookie sandwiches and arrange them in a single layer in an airtight container for at least 2 hours.
