What should a winter scavenger hunt include?

If you are like me, I need a little prompting to get outside in the winter weather. This scavenger hunt is a fantastic way to encourage you and your family to get outdoors.

Here are a few items on the scavenger list:

Animal tracks

Looking for animal tracks is a fun way to learn about different animals. Study the shape of each track and which direction the animal was going. Can your child identify the animal? If not, take a picture and later search the internet or a book from the library to discover more about the owner.

Boot prints

What can a child learn from a footprint? Which way were they headed? Where does the path lead? Can your child tell a story about the footprint? Whose footprint is it?

Snowman

Can you find a snowman in your neighborhood, or can you build one along a walking trail for someone to find? Or can you find a winter decoration with a snowman?

Pinecone

Was the pinecone open or closed? Did you know that its wooden petals protect the seeds inside? Collect pinecones to study or make pinecone crafts for later.

Snow Shovel

Can you find someone using a snow shovel? Practice some social skills by talking to your neighbor or encouraging your older kids to help an elderly neighbor shovel their walkway.

Icicles

What makes an icicle?

Bare Trees

Why do trees lose their leaves? My favorite picture book about a tree losing its leaves is “The Little Tree” by Loren Long. We read it every autumn. It’s not an educational book but a story of a tree that fears losing its leaves.

Bush with red berries

This is a great time to discuss what you should and should not eat. Identifying different types of plants is a great skill that is quite rare today.

Evergreen Trees

Evergreens such as pine trees have green foliage all year round. Can you find the perfect tree to decorate come Christmas time or the perfect branch to hang your homemade bird feeder?

Winter bird

This is a wonderful way to introduce your kids to bird watching and a great chance to teach them about the different winter birds they may see during the colder months.
