What should a camping scavenger hunt include?

This camping scavenger hunt can be divided into two categories. The first list of items is all about the campground, and the second section is all about nature and camping neighbors (furry or human).

All About the Campground

Drinking water

It is a good idea for kids to know where to find drinking water, whether it’s a nearby fountain, cooler, or fridge in the camper. Encourage kids to keep their water bottles filled and near them to prevent dehydration (especially in hot and humid weather).

Bathrooms

Let’s answer that question before we get asked a billion times. 🙂

Campground Map

I like to review the map with kids. I point out little details on the map such as short hikes, ranger station, bodies of water, and our campsite on the map.

Picnic Table

Finding the picnic table lets them know where to find the snacks and even where to sit and rest.

Tent

Everyone needs to know where they are sleeping, camper, tent, hammock. A great life skill to teach your kids is to assemble and dissemble a tent.

Hammock

If you cannot find a hammock, try to find a good spot to hang one. The perfect spot between two trees to read a book or take a nap.

Flashlight

Everyone needs a flashlight at the campground. Help kids find their flashlight and show them where to keep it.

Stop sign

Talking about the different signs around the campground helps your kids be aware of where cars drive, sidewalks, and a safe place to walk and ride bikes.

Trail head

Does the campsite have short hikes, sidewalks, or docks to fish on?

Playground

Help them find the playground and practice finding their way from the different locations, bathroom to playground, playground to campsite, etc.

Campground Nature and Neighbors

Wild flower

Encourage kids to gather a bouquet of wildflowers, greenery, and sticks for a special campsite meal. They could even save the flowers for preserving.

Sticks for tinder

Teach them where to find firewood and which sticks make great for tinder.

Perfect roasting stick

Everyone needs a good roasting stick whether it is marshmallows or hotdogs.

The best view

Where does your kiddo think the best view is? Is it a perfect place to read, watch the sunset, or listen to the birds?

Bug

Collecting and identifying bugs is always a great outdoor activity. Can they catch lightning bugs (fireflies) in a jar?

Spotted rock

I always encourage my girls to collect a treasure on each nature hike or special trip. They have a little nature collection with many pinecones, pressed flowers, seashells, and tons of rocks. If your child doesn’t have a nature collection, this would be a great opportunity to start.

3 different leaves

This is a good time to identify poison ivy to your kids.

Furry animal

Find furry animals whether it’s your camping neighbor’s dog or campground squirrels looking for your to share your snacks.

Bird nest

This one might be difficult to locate, but it’s a good way to teach your kids to observe nature and introduce them to bird watching.

License plate from a different state

Where is everyone from? Get to know your camping neighbors. We all need more hospitality in our communities.
