As Jonathan carves the nativity scene, his heart begins to soften, and the three share in the joy of Christmas and the power of love and kindness.

Mr. Willowby is a wealthy man who buys a Christmas tree that is too large for his house. His butler trims the very top off. On Christmas Eve, a family ventures into the woods guided by moonlight to decorate their favorite tree with popcorn strings, apples, tangerines, and sunflower-seed ornaments for the woodland creatures to enjoy. This book led to a Christmas family tradition of decorating a tree around our home with DIY birdseed pine cone feeders.

Karma Wilson’s Bear books are a favorite in our home. Mortimer, the little brown mouse, discovers the real meaning of Christmas, and may it be my girls’ favorite Christmas book. I included it last because this Best Books to Read Around Christmas Booklist is a heavy one packed with powerful messages, but I could not leave our little friend Mortimer out.
8. The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg
This beloved children’s book captures the magic of Christmas. There is just something about Christmas and trains. Late on Christmas Eve, a young boy boards a mysterious train while the town sleeps. There is a question of unbelief and a gift of a bell. I cannot tell you more without spoiling the story.
9. The Crippled Lamb by Max Lucado
Joshua is a little lamb born with a crippled leg. He struggles to keep up with the rest of the flock. His best friend is a cow named Abigail.
