First, explore. Then, Collect.
First things first, an outdoor adventure to find the elements for our pine cone owl. This is a great chance to explore your crafty side. Nature is the ultimate craft box. There are acorns for ears and eyes. Leaves for big ear tuffs like the Great Horned Owl. Sticks for feet and talons. Moss and tree bark for wings. The possibilities are endless!
Preparing a craft should not be stressful. When you go outdoors, take a small basket or bag to collect your finds. When you are ready to craft, set out all the supplies in a basket on the table. This allows you or your child to look at your finds and process how you want to build your pine cone owl. Placing all the items in a basket invites your child to play and use his/her imagination.
Don’t Underestimate Nature
Did you know that Velcro was inspired by nature? Think of the barbs of a thistle and how it clings to your clothes or a dog’s fur. An apple falling from a tree inspired Issac Newton to discover the Law of Gravitational Force. Many of our inventions were inspired by nature. Think of an airplane: how it soars across the sky. Watch a bird and it gives you the dream of flying. Observe a squirrel and you feel the desire to leap and scale a tree. Admire the colors of a flower and you feel the urge to paint.
Due to the stealthily silent soar of an owl, scientists are even researching an owl’s feathers to help reduce the noise of an airplane. Being sly in the sky is not the owl’s only interesting fact.
What are 10 Interesting Facts About Owls?
- First up, our Snowy Owl. Snowy Owls are unique in that they build their own nest in mounds on the floor of the Arctic Tundra.
- Unlike most owls, Snowy Owls are not nocturnal. They can be found hunting night or day.
- While female Snowy Owls have white feathers with brown spots, male Snowy Owls are pure white.
- Interestingly, owls are poor nest builders and will use abandoned nests or holes in trees or cliffs. Burrowing Owls even nest on the ground.
- When a Burrowing Owl feels threatened in its underground home, it will make a sound that resembles the sound of a rattlesnake’s tail.

DIY Easy Valentine’s Day Pine Cone Snowy Owl for All ages

Materials:
- 1 pine cone for the owl body
- 4 cotton balls for the feathers
- 2 small sticks for the feet
- 2 acorn cups for the ears
- an acorn cut in half for eyes
- a pair of googly eyes
Helpful Tools:
- Liquid glue. I recommend a hot glue gun with one glue stick if your child plans to display or play with the owl. After my child finished her owl, I went back with a hot glue gun to help the items stick while she played with them.
- Scissors to trim your nature finds, if needed.
Optional: If you want to add pink to the owl’s feathers, cut a large pink craft pom pom in half and pull it apart. Heart stickers and glitter are always a fun addition to a Valentine’s Day craft.

Step by Step Instructions for DIY Easy Valentine’s Day Pine Cone Snowy Owl
- First, take two small sticks and glue the sticks to the wide bottom of the pine cone. This will be the owl’s feet. Be careful if using hot glue.
- Second, pull apart 4 cotton balls into little tuffs. If you are using a large craft pom pom, cut the pom pom in half and pull it apart.
- Next, take the tuffs of cotton and insert them between each wood petal of the pine cone. This gives the owl a snowy effect.
- Now, cut or break an acorn in half and glue a pair of googly eyes onto each half of the acorn. Finish the eyes by gluing them on the pine cone.
- Then, glue two acorn cups on top of the pine cone for the owl’s ears.
- Finally, place a rock below the eyes for the owl’s beak.
Now, you have a lovely pine cone snowy owl for Valentine’s Day. Great job!
