Cook Time 20 minutes
Servings: 6
Course: Breakfast, Dessert

Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • 8 slices bread 1/2 to 1 inch thick slices
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tbsp cinnamon +1 tsp
  • 1/8 tsp salt a pinch
  • 4-6 tbsp butter
  • Toppings: fresh fruit, maple syrup etc optional

Equipment

  • deep dish for egg mixture (I use a pie pan)
  • bread knife
  • Whisk
  • griddle or skillet
  • spatula

Method

  1. First, using a bread knife slice the loaf of bread into 1/2 to 1-inch slices and then cut each slice in half to make French toast dippers. This part is optional.
  2. Then, add eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon (1/2 tbsp), and a pinch of salt in the pie pan. Add additional spices, if desired. Whisk together until smooth.
  3. Next, heat the griddle or skillet to medium-low heat. Once hot, melt a portion of butter (1 tbsp) to grease the griddle.
  4. Now, dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture making sure the slice is good and coated. Do not soak. Heavily coat each slice. Place immediately onto the hot griddle. Let cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown. Add butter as needed to prevent sticking and add more seasoning to the egg mixture once you have dipped half of your slices.
  5. Finally, serve with favorite toppings and ENJOY!

Notes

    •  Add spices. To keep your French toast tasting consistent, add at least one teaspoon of cinnamon to the egg mixture after dipping half of the slices of bread. If you are using a combination of seasonings, add a bit more of those seasonings too. If you do not, you will have egg toast. That's okay, too, because egg toast is delicious.
    • Do not soak. Bread is excellent at absorbing. Make sure each slice of bread is heavily covered.  But soaking the bread will cause it to be soggy and fall apart.
    • Make dippers. Cut each bread slice in half to make little dippers. This makes it easier for little hands to hold and dip into the maple syrup
    • No whole milk. You can substitute with heavy whipping cream or buttermilk (buttermilk will give the flavor a slight tang).
