How to make a Pom Pom Bee Craft for Kids

This Pom Pom Bee Craft for kids creates the cutest little bumble bees, and it fits perfectly in your child’s pocket or little purse. My three-year-old immediately wanted to hold it and sing to it. The little bee now stays secure in her tiny purse or pocket. As you can see from the photo above, I had little hands assisting, as always, making me love this little bee even more. He took on a tossed and tumbled appearance, and I think that’s a perfect type of bee for a toddler.
No fancy equipment like Pom Pom makers is needed for this craft and no trip to the craft store. All it takes to create this Pom Pom bee is recycled cardboard for a DIY Pom Pom maker, yellow yarn, scrap ribbon, and black yarn. If you have a black pipe cleaner, I would recommend using it over black yarn because it will handle the tossing and tumbling of a toddler a lot better.
The best part about creating these little bees is that this easy project provides a fun way for young and older kids to work on their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination,

How to make a Pom Pom bee craft for kids
Craft Supplies List
- bright yellow yarn for the bee’s body
- black yarn for the bee’s black stripes
- ribbon for wings
- recycled cardboard
- box cutter to cut out the DIY Pom Pom maker
- scissors
- optional:
- Googly eyes would be a great addition to the little bumble bee. I did not include googly eyes because my 18-month-old had her eyes on the bee, and she is notorious for peeling off googly eyes and trying to eat them.
- Black pipe cleaners would be easier to mold for the bee’s antennas and the bee’s stripes.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Pom Pom Bee Craft for Kids: A simple bee craft

Step 1: Cut a Pom Pom maker out of cardboard.
First, have a grown-up cut a square from a recycled cardboard box. The Pom Pom bee in the upper left corner of the above picture was made using a 3-inch homemade Pom Pom maker. The one that I’m making in the photos uses a 6-inch homemade pom-pom maker. If you want a 6-inch bumble bee, cut out a 6″ x 6″ square. Next, cut a small rectangle from the center of one of the sides. You can change the size of your bee by using a different size piece of cardboard. This is a simple way to make a homemade Pom Pom maker.
If you need more instructions, Kate at The Craft Train has a 2-minute easy tutorial.

Step 2: Cut a 6-inch piece of yarn and put it to the side. Then, begin to wrap the yarn around the cardboard.
Next, cut a 6-inch piece of yarn and place it in the center of the Pom Pom maker. This piece of yarn will hold the Pom Pom together once you are finished wrapping the yarn. Do not skip this step. Wrap the yarn around the cardboard until you are satisfied with the thickness. I did not count how many times I wrapped the yarn, but my toddler assisted and just kept wrapping. The more times you wrap the yarn around the cardboard, the thicker your Pom Pom will be.

Step 3: Tie the separate piece of yarn around the wrapped yarn. Make a tight knot.
This step is very important. If not done correctly or tightly, your yarn will not remain together, and your bumble bee will be easily pulled apart.

Step 4: Cut both sides of the yarn.
According to my toddler, it looks like the Lorax’s mustache or our yarn gnome beard that we made for our pine cone gnome. But, more practically, it looks like a tassel that has been tied in the middle.

Now, you have a fluffy pompom. It’s so easy to make homemade tassels and pom poms with this DIY method. There are endless possibilities for crafts using this DIY Pom Pom maker.
Let’s keep going.

Step 5: Trim the yarn.
Next, trim the yarn Pom Pom with scissors. This is a great time for kids to practice their cutting skills with adult supervision.

Step 6: Tie a ribbon around the middle of the Pom Pom.
Now, tie a ribbon around the middle of the Pom Pom to make the bee’s wings. If you do not have a ribbon, a pipe cleaner mold it into wings or cut out a wing shape from white craft foam, white card stock, book pages, newspaper, etc.

Step 7: Then, wrap black yarn around the bee’s body to make his stripes.
If you have young children participating, I recommend using pipe cleaners to mold around the bee to make its stripes. This is easier for little hands to manipulate versus wrapping the yarn.

Step 8: Cut a small piece of yarn and tie it onto the bee’s head to make his antennas.
Again, I recommend using pipe cleaners to mold the bee’s antennas. We used craft scraps. But when I make this craft again with my littles, I will use black pipe cleaners rather than black yarn.

How to make a Thankful Pumpkin Craft Garland for Kids
Equipment
- scissors
- Stapler (with staples)
- pen
Materials
- 3 pieces orange construction paper
- 1 piece green construction paper
- twine (length determined on location of garland)
Instructions
- First, cut the orange construction paper into strips. Use a ruler and mark every inch for straight lines, or if younger kids are practicing scissor skills.
- Next, write something you are thankful for on each strip of orange paper.
- Then, gather two strips of orange paper. Place the pieces of paper flat on a surface in the shape of a cross and bring the ends into a circle (like making a paper chain). Staple the ends together. This will create the curved edges of your pumpkin.
- Next, staple a piece of curled green construction paper to the top of the pumpkin to add a stem. Alternatively, twist a green pipe cleaner around a pencil for the stem/vine.
- Lastly, repeat until you have the desired amount of pumpkins and thread onto a twine to complete your garland.
