THE DRAGON’ S LIPSTICK SMOOTHIE

Frozen and cubed pink dragon fruit, leafy green baby spinach, and a spoonful of chia seeds gathered on a wooden cutting board ready to make a kid-friendly dragon fruit smoothie.

Simple Ingredient Breakdown for Kid-Friendly Pink Dragon Fruit Smoothie Recipe

  • Red Dragon Fruit. This odd exotic fruit with its magenta flesh is a Dr. Seuss fruit if I ever did see one. This beautiful Seussical fruit is loaded with vitamins A and C, calcium, and magnesium. Also, do not worry about the tiny black seeds, they will not affect the texture of this fun smoothie.
  • Raspberries. I chose raspberries to enhance the bright pink color of the smoothie and for additional benefits of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, biotin, and vitamin C.
  • Baby Spinach. I keep a huge box of spinach in our refrigerator. Ready to sprinkle these little green leaves in anything I can. Spinach is an excellent source of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and vitamin C.
  • Chia Seeds. These tiny seeds are loaded with calcium, fiber, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, vitamin B1, and vitamin B3. Sneak this delightfully packed superfood into recipes when you can.
  • Greek Yogurt. Adding protein to any meal or snack helps prevent the big glucose spike that occurs when eating carbohydrates (sugars). Protein also helps us stay fuller for longer. In addition to being a source of protein, Greek yogurt creates a creamy texture.
  • Milk. This recipe calls for whole milk. I have not yet tried this healthy smoothie using a non-dairy alternative such as coconut milk, almond milk, oat milk, or even coconut water. But if you do, please let me know in the comments.
  • Vanilla Extract. Calms the bitterness of the Greek yogurt.

How to Get Kids Involved in the Kitchen?

Smoothies are an easy way for kids to explore different flavors while adding vitamins, minerals, and calcium to their diet. Kids love bright colors! Using fresh fruits or frozen fruits is a great way to add color to their diet without artificial dyes or flavors. It is always fun to see what fun color your smoothie will be. 🙂 Even a picky eater can have so much fun picking out their choice of colorful fruit to add to their smoothie or smoothie bowls.

Here is a list of tasks for kids in the kitchen while making dragon fruit smoothies:

  • gather ingredients
  • wash produce
  • measure and pour ingredients into the pitcher of the blender
  • push the button on the blender
  • pour servings into individual cups or bowls
  • serve family and friends
  • learn to properly clean up the kitchen

* Supervise and consider age appropriateness for the task. Always supervise kids in the kitchen. You know your children the best.

Why is Dragon Fruit so Expensive?

Fresh dragon fruit is quite pricing because it only grows in very few parts of the world, such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, and Mexico. The cost of this beautiful tropical fruit runs about $5-6 for one piece of fruit.

Mama-Make-Do! Budget-Friendly Smoothie with Dragonfruit

1/4 cup Dragon Fruit and 1/2 cup of Raspberries

I have offered a range of 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of dragon fruit and raspberries in this smoothie recipe. My whole purpose in providing a range is to help save money. We use closer to 1/4 cup of frozen dragon fruit to get the benefits, the vibrant color, and the tropical flavor while staying within my grocery budget.

I prefer to buy a bag of frozen pink dragon fruit from Pitaya Foods. It cost about $4.75 for 12 ounces of fruit. One dragon fruit cost: $5, and I am not efficient at cutting them. So, it makes more sense for me to purchase the frozen fruit in the freezer section of the grocery store.
