Simple and Fresh Ingredients Breakdown for Kiwi Watermelon Slushie for Kids

  • Watermelon. Eating food with high water content is the best way to stay hydrated. While not only high in water content, watermelon contains potassium, magnesium, vitamin C, and vitamin A.
  • Kiwi. Kiwi is yet another fruit with high water content and packed with vitamin C. It contains potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Don’t let the kiwi seeds deter you from adding them to your slushies.
  • Honey. Raw honey contains trace minerals, including manganese, zinc, and selenium. Please be sure to substitute honey with organic cane sugar or omit it if a child is younger than one year old.
  • Chia Seeds. These tiny seeds are loaded with calcium, fiber, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, vitamin B1, and vitamin B3. Sneak a tablespoon of chia seeds into recipes when you can.

Help kids choose slushie recipes with only wholesome ingredients. Focusing on in-season and fresh ingredients is a great way to increase electrolytes, minerals, and vitamins.

Here is a list of tasks for kids in the kitchen while making a kiwi watermelon slushy:

* Supervise and consider age appropriateness for each task. Always supervise your kids in the kitchen. You know your children the best.

Fruit is so expensive. How to Buy Fruit on a Budget?

Buying fruit can be costly, but it doesn’t have to break the bank.

Here are a few ways to lower your grocery bill:

  • start a backyard garden
  • buy only seasonal produce
  • buy produce from bulk warehouse
  • buy fruit when it goes on sale
  • shop local farmer’s market

Money Saving Tip

Purchase fruit when in season or on sale. Eat what you can then freeze the rest. Before freezing the fruit, roughly chop it and store it in a freezer bag. When you have enough, make slushies, popsicles, or smoothies.

I do the same thing for my leftover vegetables.

I store all my vegetables in one bag and the vegetable scraps in a separate zip-lock bag. When the vegetable bag is full, then I make vegetable soup. When the vegetable scrap bag is full, then I make broth. The frozen fruit bag is full, then it is slushy time!
